Canada May Allow Non-Canadians Into the Telecom Sector
It appears that the Harper government is considering loosening up the foreign ownership rules in the Canadian Telecom sector. Currently, foreigners are not allowed to own a majority of any telecom company. This was a major problem for Wind Mobile when Public Mobile and Telus got the CRTC to rule that it did not meet the foreign ownership requirements.
If the rules are loosened, this would be good news for Canadian consumers. It is expected that prices will fall while service will improve. The industry would probably also benefit from the infusion of capital that foreign owners may bring.
